Happy Birthday Mike Mignola

Mike Mignola has been one of my favorite artists since I first picked up the Rocket Raccoon, Incredible Hulk, and Alpha Flight issues he drew in the early Eighties.  His work has a mystique and mystery that no one else was creating at that time or in my opinion, since.  His style has changed much from his early eighties work with his later work at DC Comics, the Bram Stoker's Dracula adaptation,  and the advent of Hellboy.  I have enjoyed the journey through every stylistic iteration of his art.

His work has been hugely influential upon my artistic style and process.  I send this out in thanks for the literal years of entertainment and joy I've received from his work.  Thank you Mr. Mignola and Happy Birthday!

Featured Creature: The Disc of Abrasax

The Disc of Abrasax originally appeared in a fiction created for a previous Featured Creature post, The Night Thing.  Although unnamed at that time, I knew the disc was important and would appear again.  In the image here we have the disc as it appeared at the end of The Night Thing.  The following story is what happened to the disc and Ricky since we saw them last.

The Featured Creature: The Night Thing

Here we have a strange winged denizen of the night. Once I'd inked this piece, I didn't care for the flame hair, but it was already integrated in the drawing.  However, in Photoshop I was able to remove it.  When I began adding the tones, a seed of a story came to me.  It didn't take long for it to explode into a full short story, but I haven't gotten it to a finished state just yet.  Expect an update with the full story soon.

Here is the beginning of the story:

Devils Head I: Dilemma of the Dark Votive

This is the beginning of a series of four pieces all of which were created from the same source material.  Each had its own voice and message, so I've chosen to give them each separate posts.

This piece struck me as the revelation of a dark device.  Some votive to an ancient devil suddenly discovered in your possession, its raspy voice whispering from the half light of a candle lit room.  What if the Monkey's Paw whispered to you in the night?
